Food photography is a very specific genre, as it demands a passion and a deep understanding of the products; let’s remember that ice cream melts, caramel sticks, and fresh herbs wither. Waagmi has always had a great love for food and cooking, and so, it seemed natural for her to eventually add photography to the mix. Her style is unfussy, approachable, and not too serious. She loves to jump from dark and moody to light and bright depending on the dish she is photographing. This flexibility of tone always puts the dish first, giving it an authentic mood that goes straight to the point: your appetite.
Food is a common thread for all of us. We all have memories that include food or a dish that we remember. We eat to stay alive, but we also eat when we celebrate, and we eat in times of sadness, so it is an integral part of our lives.
Using a Nikon and Fujifilm a 50 mm and 35 mm respectively, she shoots only in natural light. In her process, pre-production takes a lot of time as it includes making the food that she is going to shoot. Retouching is usually a breeze, as she tries to capture the dishes as naturally as possible, so her editing is minimal.
The simplicity of her setup is not to be taken for granted, as one cannot become a great food photographer without an extensive understanding of light, colour palettes, and styling trends.
Although its 4 years as a food photographer and food stylist within the specialty food in which Waagmi got her start, it was the photographic process that energized, thrilled, and motivated her enough to trade in the cubicle for a camera. Now as a photographer, Waagmi captures the moment and tells the story of food within the frame for a variety of editorial and advertising clients as well as various cookbook publishers and publications, and on a photography project with the leading foodie app in gulf called Talabat Qatar. Waagmi is based in Doha, Qatar, by education, she is a chemical engineer and worked as a process engineer.
